The primary focus of the Hazardous Fuel Reduction Program is to administer the agreement between the Bureau of Indian Affairs (BIA) and the Native Village of Tazlina (NVT) to reduce or mitigate the hazardous fire fuels surrounding the various homes in the Tazlina area. This work will consist of removal of ladder fuel and thinning of a 90 ft fire ring around homes and private structures as well as removal of the slash/brush caused by this activity. This program will also allow the NVT to employ eligible red card holders as well as reduce the hazard of burnable fuel near the important structures throughout the local community. During the 2014 fire season the State of Alaska will employ red card holders to fight urban wild land fire and when complete these card holders will be able to return to work with the NVT to concentrate on hazardous fuel reduction or work on the existing fuel break surrounding the community. For more information on the program please contact Greg Engebretson at 907-822-4375.
